Will my marker rust?
No, it won't, but if the metal is exposed to moisture and rain, it may develop a patina called verdigris over time. This patina is bluish-green colour and is caused by atmospheric oxidation. It can be really pretty and add character to your markers, but if you don't like this transformation, you can refresh your markers by sanding the patina off. Adding a coat of clear acrylic spray can also keep them shiny for longer.
Will the metal get discoloured in contact with the soil?
The part that goes into the soil may get discoloured over time. It's a natural process when unsealed brass is in contact with the soil and moisture, which causes corrosion where zinc is lost and copper remains, and can be influenced by factors like soil composition, moisture, and oxygen. This can also be prevented by using a layer of clear acrylic spray.
